Les Weymouth’s eyes filled with tears remembering his son Charles, a veteran who died by suicide last year. He held a photo to his chest as he spoke about his son’s service in Afghanistan and Iraq and his struggles with mental health after returning home. Weymouth, of Hancock, said his “big-hearted” son, who became a nurse after his time in the military, struggled to cope with having killed people. Serving in the Air Force, Weymouth said, Charles was usually distanced from the brunt of the violence, but it haunted him nonetheless. “He didn’t see the faces or hear the screams, but he heard them in his dreams after,” he said.
